OB/GYN vs. Midwife: How to Choose the Right Path for Your Pregnancy

OB/GYN vs. Midwife: How to Choose the Right Path for Your Pregnancy

Finding out you're pregnant brings a wave of excitement and a long list of decisions. One of the most important choices you'll make is deciding who will guide you through the childbirth journey.

At Holistic OB/GYN & Midwifery, our dedicated team, including Paola A. Escobar, MSN, MBA-HCM, CNM, and Sandra Hronopoulos, APN, provides personalized care for families in Paterson, New Jersey, and Spring Valley, New York. We believe in helping you understand your options so you can choose the path that feels right for you.

Our care model is midwife-led and collaborative. We provide personalized prenatal, birth, and postpartum care, with access to OB/GYNs and maternal-fetal medicine specialists when consultation or co-management is needed.

Whether you choose midwifery, traditional obstetrics, or a combination, your safety and comfort are always our top priorities.

Understanding the philosophical differences

According to the Cleveland Clinic (2025), midwives are trained to view pregnancy and birth as normal, healthy life events, while obstetricians are specifically trained to diagnose and treat medical complications. This means midwives often focus on holistic wellness, education, and low-intervention techniques.

On the other hand, obstetricians (OB/GYNs) are medical doctors who provide routine and high-risk pregnancy care, gynecologic care, and surgical care when needed, including C-sections and procedures or complex complications that fall outside a midwife's scope of practice.

Debunking common midwifery myths

Many people assume that choosing a midwife means you must have a natural home birth without any pain relief. However, this is a common misconception that doesn't reflect modern care.

Research from the University of Missouri Health Care (2023) shows that nearly 90% of births attended by midwives involve certified nurse midwives or certified midwives, and almost all of those births occur in hospitals. Furthermore, certified nurse midwives can coordinate medical interventions, including inductions and epidurals, if you choose to use them during labor.

How to choose the right path for you

The right choice depends on your health history, your personal preferences, and how you envision your birth experience.

If you have a low-risk pregnancy and want relationship-centered support, education, and a lower-intervention approach when appropriate, midwifery care may be a good fit. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, significant medical conditions, or a complication that may require surgery or specialized management, OB/GYN-led or co-managed care may be the better choice.

How collaborative pregnancy care works

You don’t always have to choose one model and leave the other behind. Many patients receive midwifery-led care with physician consultation or co-management when needed. At Holistic OB/GYN & Midwifery, our team supports informed choices while collaborating with OB/GYNs and maternal-fetal medicine specialists for higher-risk concerns.

At our offices in Paterson, New Jersey, and Spring Valley, New York, we offer a collaborative approach that gives you the best of both worlds. To discuss your options and start your prenatal care, contact our team to schedule a consultation today.
