Experience the Midwife Difference: Why Women Are Choosing Holistic Care

At Holistic OB/GYN & Midwifery, we believe pregnancy and birth are natural, deeply personal life events. Led by our dedicated providers, Paola A. Escobar, MSN, MBA-HCM, CNM, and Sandra Hronopoulos, APN, we provide compassionate, relationship-centered care to women in Paterson, New Jersey, and Spring Valley, New York.

If you are looking for a supportive approach to your health, you are not alone. Many women choose midwifery for its emphasis on personalized care, education, and shared decision-making.

Our team blends clinical excellence with a holistic philosophy. Whether you need routine gynecology services, support for childbirth, or specialized care like a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), we are here to support your choices. Let's explore why midwifery care is transforming the modern birth experience.

What is the midwife difference?

The difference with midwives lies in our focus on personalized, low-intervention care that honors your body's natural processes. We prioritize patience, continuous support, and shared decision-making. This approach does not just feel better—it's backed by strong clinical evidence.

Research has found lower rates of some interventions with midwife-led care. In a study published online in Birth in 2025, people receiving midwife-led intrapartum care had an unplanned C-section rate of 8.9%, compared with 15.2% among those receiving obstetrician-led care.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that among low-risk pregnancies, midwife-led care was associated with a 42% lower relative risk of instrumental vaginal delivery.

Our approach emphasizes individualized care and avoiding unnecessary interventions.

How does holistic care benefit you and your baby?

Holistic care benefits both you and your baby by prioritizing emotional well-being alongside physical health. Emotional support and shared decision-making are important parts of the midwifery model, alongside ongoing clinical monitoring of you and your baby.

In the same 2024 meta-analysis of low-risk pregnancies, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) admission was 25% lower in the midwife-led groups overall, although results varied across the included studies.

Furthermore, mothers report higher satisfaction with their prenatal care and delivery experience under midwifery care. We also offer doula services for additional physical and emotional support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Common myths about midwifery care

Many people believe that choosing a midwife means you must have an unmedicated home birth. In reality, most certified nurse-midwives practice in well-equipped hospital settings.

Most births attended by certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives in the U.S. occur in hospitals. According to 2022 CDC data, about 94% occurred in hospitals, while about 3% occurred in freestanding birth centers.

Another common myth is that midwives lack formal medical training. Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) are board-certified, advanced practice healthcare providers with graduate-level degrees.

CNMs are advanced practice providers who are trained to assess and diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, and order and interpret tests within their scope of practice. At our practice, we offer a collaborative model. This collaborative model combines midwifery care with access to obstetric and maternal-fetal medicine consultation or co-management when needed.

Your birth journey should be safe, empowering, and deeply respected. Whether you are planning a pregnancy, seeking support for urinary incontinence, or simply need a routine annual exam, our team is here for you.
