Obstetrics Q & A

What is obstetrics?

Obstetrics is the medical specialty area of caring for pregnant women and their unborn babies. The midwives at Holistic OB/GYN & Midwifery Service provide personalized obstetrics services including:

  • Monitoring your and your baby’s health with routine tests such as ultrasounds, blood work, and other screening procedures
  • Checking for health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and genetic disorders that could lead to complications
  • Providing advice on diet, exercise, medications, and maintaining your health throughout pregnancy
  • Offering advice on coping with morning sickness, back pain, and other common side effects of pregnancy

Additionally, your midwife or obstetrics provider can provide information about what you can expect at each stage of pregnancy and answer your questions to help you feel confident throughout your pregnancy.

How often should I have prenatal appointments?

The usual schedule for prenatal appointments is once a month for the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Then you have bi-weekly appointments between your 28th and 36th week of pregnancy. For your final weeks, you have a checkup every week.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you will have more frequent checkups. Your midwife provides a customized schedule of appointments for you, depending on your needs.

Most high-risk pregnancies are perfectly healthy and end in safe, happy deliveries. High-risk is a term applied if you have a condition that could lead to complications. For example, if you’re over the age of 35, obese, or have a health condition like high blood pressure or diabetes, your midwife will want to monitor your pregnancy more closely.

Why do I need so many prenatal appointments?

In the approximately 40 weeks of pregnancy, you create a whole new human being, and your body changes significantly to accommodate the new life developing inside of you. Prenatal care allows your midwife to monitor your health and the health and development of your baby.

The frequent appointments provide ample opportunity for any issues or potential complications to be diagnosed and managed to protect you and your baby. You benefit from the peace of mind that your baby is developing correctly and that your midwife gets to know you before your baby is born.
